delete text This is easier than it may seem. If it isn't perfect it is OK.

Now we will work on the main color, the one we started with. We will copy it and paste it to a new layer on top of the first one.

After you make the new stencil you can create your gradient as shown.

Repeat what was done earlier and you will be left with only the gradient text.
Take it back up to its starting point.

Now we will add some black to the outside of the very original text NOT the one you just made. The one below it! Then after you get the outline, select it and convert it to a fill.
